  1. Wear protective styles: Braids, sew in’s, etc, keep your hair protected from the harsh winter weather with protective styles. 
  2. Maintain a healthy diet: Be sure to eat a well-balanced diet. 
  3. Drink lots of water: Be sure to drink the recommended amount of 8 glasses of water a day. 
  4. Wear protection under your hats (satin bonnet, etc): Keep your hair protected from damage by buying a silk lining cap. You can purchase one from Amazon here. 
  5. Weekly oil treatments: Hot oil treatments help stimulate blood flow to the scalp and seal moisture into your ends. 
  6. Deep condition your hair weekly: Deep condition your hair weekly to combat dryness and split ends. 
  7. Keep your hair moisturized: Winter is extremely drying on natural hair. It’s important to moisturize your hair every day or every other day. 
  8. Keep your ends trimmed: Keep your hair trimmed on a regular basis to prevent split ends from rising up the shaft of your hair strands. 
  9. Avoid direct heat: Help keep your hair healthy by avoiding direct heat. 
  10. Deep condition with warm conditioner or sit under the dryer: Help the conditioner penetrate the strands of your hair by using a form of heat. 
  11. Wash your hair less often: Help keep your hair moisturized by washing less often in the winter.

  16. Take vitamins: Take vitamins to fill in any gaps from your diet. 
  17. Seal your ends: Keep your ends moisturized by sealing your ends. 
  18. Avoid “wash n go’s”: For the same reasons you want to avoid humectants in the winter. 
  19. Finger detangle or use wide-tooth combs: Avoid manipulation damage by finer detangling or using a wide-tooth comb. 
  20. Avoid tight styles: Tight styles can cause unnecessary damage and breakage to your hair.
